Are Jews indigenous to the land of Israel — or European colonizers?

Short answer: The evidence that Jews began in this land is about as strong as ancient history gets. It comes from archaeology, written records, language, and prayer, and it spans 3,000 years [see Document 20]. The "European colonizer" framing fails on the evidence. Half of Israel's Jews descend from communities that never left the Middle East. The European half arrived as refugees fleeing mass murder, not as agents of any home country. And none of this erases Palestinian roots — this site documents both peoples' ties to the land with the same care, because the evidence supports both.

What the record shows

• Origin in the land: The Tel Dan Inscription ("House of David"), the Mesha Stele, Assyrian and Babylonian royal records, and digs across Israel each point to the Israelite kingdoms from ~1000 BCE. These sources are independent of one another [VERIFIED via peer-reviewed archaeology; scale and dating debates exist within scholarship — see Document 20's calibrated treatment]
• Continuity through exile: After the Roman destructions (70 and 135 CE), Jewish life carried on in the land, especially in Galilee. Meanwhile, diaspora communities kept the connection alive in law, prayer, language, and calendar for nineteen centuries — "Next Year in Jerusalem" [DOCUMENTED via rabbinic literature, liturgical manuscripts; Document 20]
• Half of Israel never "came from Europe": Roughly half of Israeli Jews are Mizrahi and Sephardic. They descend from the ~850,000 who left Arab and Muslim lands (1948–1978) and from communities in Iraq, Yemen, Iran, and North Africa. Those communities predate both Islam and the European presence in the region [DOCUMENTED via Documents 3, 6, 7]
• The "colonizer" test fails structurally: Colonists serve a mother country and can return to it. Jewish immigrants to Palestine/Israel were mostly refugees — from pogroms, the Holocaust, and Arab-state expulsions. They had no mother country behind them and nowhere to return [ANALYTICAL FRAMEWORK — the framework test from Document 11, applied with the same standard used for every nationalism]

The symmetric truth

Palestinians are also rooted in the land. The population shows a continuous line from antiquity, through Arabization after the 7th-century conquests. Palestinian national identity took shape in the 19th and 20th centuries — as all modern national identities did, including Zionism [SCHOLARLY CONSENSUS per the historiography in Document 11]. "Jews are indigenous" and "Palestinians belong there" are both supported by evidence. The propaganda move, from either side, is to claim that one connection requires erasing the other [see Document 15].
