Does Hamas use children as weapons?

Short answer: YES — as institutional practice, documented above all by Hamas itself. The evidence is not guessed from what enemies say. It is the group's own announcements, its own schools, its own television station, and the UN's formal listing.

The four strongest anchors [each tagged]

  1. The camps, self-announced: the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas's military wing, announced that its "Vanguards of Liberation" camps trained 25,000 participants aged 15 and up in 2015. The training included live fire, shoulder-fired missiles, and rappelling, and AFP covered it at the time. In 2021, Hamas publicly defended its ~50,000-registrant camp season rather than denying it.   2. The schools: Hamas's education ministry ran the Futuwwa paramilitary elective inside Gaza's government high schools. By 2014 this covered 49 schools and about 13,000 students, with Qassam operatives assisting [DOCUMENTED — with European Parliament corroboration; the full curriculum record is in Document 30]
  3. The broadcaster: Hamas's own Al-Aqsa TV ran a scheduled children's program (2007–09+). Its Mickey Mouse-lookalike mascot was "martyred" on air, and martyrdom messaging was delivered to child callers. This is on tape and undisputed by any party [VERIFIED — recordings]
  4. The UN listing: in 2024, the UN formally listed the Qassam Brigades for the abduction of children. About 30+ minors were taken hostage on October 7, with the Bibas children the named case [VERIFIED]. Add the Second Intifada record: over four years, Palestinian armed groups including Hamas dispatched at least ten under-18 suicide bombers (HRW's count). The precisions that make this answer credible [the method]

  • The UN listing is for abduction and killing or maiming, not for recruitment-and-use. No party in the Israel/Palestine theater carries the recruitment listing. Instead, Hamas's camps are documented by its own announcements. That is stronger evidence than a listing, and it is the accurate claim [VERIFIED]
  • A famous pro-Israel claim fails verification, and this site says so: the claim was "160 children died digging Hamas's terror tunnels." The Journal of Palestine Studies corrected its own article. The word "children" was inserted in editing; 160 was the total tunnel-death count; and the tunnels were the commercial Egypt tunnels. What survives is still damning: first-hand documentation, in a Palestinian-studies journal, of child tunnel labor that Hamas's authorities did nothing to stop [VERIFIED — the observation and the correction, both printed]
  • The mirror sentence one standard requires: Israel's file contains a human-shields practice, using Palestinian civilians including children. It is documented, banned by Israel's own High Court (2005), and prosecuted (two soldiers convicted, 2010). Its disputed recurrence in wartime is under open military-police investigation. That is a grave violation category of its own, but a different one: no Israeli program enlists, trains, or deploys minors, and no body has ever listed Israel for recruitment-and-use [VERIFIED — each element]
